Charming antique haven east of Austin named best little town in Texas
Round Top, a Fayette County hot spot for antique lovers, tops Texan communities in new recap of America’s best small towns
The discoverer Travel blog recently named the small town No.1 in every state, and Round Top – home to less than 90 residents – claimed bragging rights in Texas. Round Top, about 7 miles south of US Highway 290 East, is about 80 miles southeast of Austin and about 95 miles northwest of Houston.
“Take a detour on your way from Austin to Houston to Round Top, where there seem to be more antique dealers than actual townspeople,” The discoverer advises. “When you’re not browsing antiques and shopping at a farmers market, stop by Royers Café to sample one of its legendary pies. Road tripers can park… overnight in the city’s RV park and campground.
This month is a prime time to visit Round Top. From October 14 to 31, the city is hosting the fall version of the Round Top Antiques Show. Meanwhile, the Original Round Top Antiques Fair will take place October 25-30.
The list of year round antique destinations in and around Round Top is extensive. Stores include Bill Moore Antiques, Bootleggers Antiques, Cottonseed Trading Company, Hermann Furniture, Junk Gypsy Company, McLaren’s Antiques & Interiors, Mesquite Mesa at Coyote Station, Round Top Ranch Antiques, Round Top Vintage Market, Second Market and Company and Townsend Provisions.
For those looking for overnight accommodation, the Round Top area offers a number of options, such as hotels, inns, bed and breakfasts, and vacation rentals.
“Round Top companies provide shopping, dining, accommodation and culture in big cities, without the headaches of big cities. Our city is a year-round hub… and a must-see destination for HGTV and antique enthusiasts, ”according to the Round Top Chamber of Commerce.
