Small town, big balls: Northland, the place for the cheapest ball of chips

A scoop of crisps isn’t hard to buy, but you’ll find the best value in Northland.

The small New Zealand town is generous with scoops of crisps, says Consumer NZ, and a Northland take-out restaurant offers the cheapest crisps in the country.

A survey of New Zealand consumers found that the best value for money crisp golden (or soggy if you’re inclined that way) could be found at Moerewa Takeaways in Northland.

A spoon cost $ 3 and weighed over half a kilo.

Owner Tiki Pedro said the store likely consumed around 10kg of crisps per day.

“We don’t actually weigh our chips, we just pick them up. When people buy larger orders, we give them extra tokens. And sometimes the school orders $ 50 worth of chips, so we probably add five more scoops. ”

Consumer NZ recruited 22 potato chip enthusiasts from across the country to buy and weigh a scoop of crisps and found there were differences in value.

Mystery shoppers bought balls in Dunedin, Tasman, Wellington, Wairarapa, Hawke’s Bay, Hamilton, Waihi, Auckland and Northland.

The average price of a spoon was $ 3.59, but it ranged from $ 2.50 to $ 4.60.

An average scoop of crisps weighed 365g, but the lightest weighed 230g and the heaviest more than double at 510g.

The southernmost village on the west coast is home to exceptional fish and chips – you might even spot rare dolphins while eating lunch.

The survey found that Northland was the cheapest region to buy a scoop of crisps – the average cost per 100g was 73 cents. The second cheapest region was Hamilton at 80 cents per 100g.

The most expensive balls were found in Auckland and Tasman. The two regions had an average cost of $ 1.19 per 100 g.

“It can be difficult to know exactly how many tokens you’re going to end up with when ordering a spoon,” said Caitlin Cherry, Content Manager at Consumer NZ.

“We found that small towns tended to be more generous with their fries. Not all balls were created equal with price differences and quantities varying considerably from one chip shop to another.
